Batman’s Story

Batman was born en route to Mission: Wolf in the spring of 2009 with his siblings, Oreo, Buku, and Asia. The pups and their mother, Valley Spirit, arrived at the refuge with a male wolf-dog named Talon who had been confiscated from the same property. Talon was placed in the vet building, while Valley and the pups were taken to an enclosure. When we opened the kennel, Valley almost immediately began to explore her new home, and within a few minutes discovered an old den. She cleaned out the den and, one by one, carried her pups down to it. For the next few weeks, staff did not see any of the pups, though Valley was starting to become very friendly.

When the pups finally did emerge, the staff were shocked to see what looked to be four Labrador puppies stumble out of the den. We had assumed that since he came from the same property, Talon was the pups’ father. We have since attained information that the pups’ father was in fact a pit bull.

Batman lived with an older wolf-dog named Aurora until she retired to the director’s farm in 2014. With Aurora at the farm, Batman was in need of a new companion and we introduced him to Amulet, a female wolf-dog. The two were a perfect example of how opposites attract: Batman’s calm, go-with-the-flow demeanor complimented Amulet’s high-strung fiery energy. Unfortunately Amulet passed away November of 2019 so Batman was paired with Amulet’s brother Fenris, who had recently lost his partner. For nearly 4 years the two enjoyed each other’s company, and were always found close together. Sadly Fenris passed away in July of 2023. After the passing of his companion, Batman became lonely and began crying to his brothers who lived next door. The staff made the decision to slowly reunite the brothers to see how they would do together after so many years living apart. They did so well during their gradual reintroduction that Batman is now living alongside his two litter mates. The three seem to love being reunited.
